What has to be true

A 50-bottle search usually means one of two jobs. The first is a furniture cabinet or a wine fridge. That is not what APEX is for. The second is a small finished room: an under-stair cellar, a closet conversion, or a tasting nook with a real door. Only the second job needs a ducted cabinet. If you are still deciding, stop here and walk the space. If there is no vapor barrier, no insulated door, and no adjoining room for a compressor, you are shopping for furniture.
If the room is real, volume is still the load, not the bottle count. A 3 ft by 4 ft by 8 ft closet is about 96 ft3. APEX 3500 is rated to about 900 ft3 on an honest R-20 envelope. The unit will not struggle. What fails is a leaky door, no vapor barrier, or a cabinet stuffed in a hot garage. People at this size often ask whether a through-wall unit would be cheaper. It is louder, it sits in the finished face, and it still needs a license if you want a warranty. Ducted is the architecture if the interior has to look like a cellar.
Glass matters even at this scale. A clear glass door on a 100 ft3 box is a large share of the wall. Add about 15% and keep the compressor out of the glass. Supply and return grilles only. The mechanical space next door must stay 50-77F year-round. A utility closet that hits 90F in August is not a location, even when the cellar itself is tiny.
Humidity is the envelope, not a second machine. A 50-bottle closet with a leaky hollow-core door will dry out or sweat no matter which APEX you buy. Seal the box, put the vapor barrier on the warm side, and let the cabinet hold 55F. If you need a separate humidifier, that is a later conversation after the room actually holds temperature.
Electrical is the same as a larger APEX 3500 job: a dedicated 115V / 60Hz 15A circuit and a sloped condensate drain. Do not share the circuit with lighting. Licensed HVAC installs. Factory charge does not make this a weekend project. DIY voids the warranty on every APEX model, including the smallest room.

Is APEX 3500 too big for 50 bottles?
On volume, yes it has headroom. That is acceptable in a finished small room. It is the wrong product if the bottles sit in furniture. Size the room, then decide.
Can I skip a licensed HVAC contractor at this size?
No. Circuit, ducts, drain, and commissioning still require a license. DIY voids the warranty on every APEX model.
Will a 50-bottle closet hold humidity without extra equipment?
If the envelope is sealed and the door is insulated, yes. Humidity follows 55F in a tight box. Fix leaks before you add a humidifier.
