One hundred bottles is the first size that is almost always a real cellar, not a fridge. Typical rooms run 4 ft by 5 ft by 8 ft (160 ft3) or a slightly taller under-stair volume. Dense racking can pack 100 bottles into less space. Loose display racking needs more. If you want an aisle and a place to stand, believe the larger number. The bottle catalog is not a cubic-foot converter.
APEX 3500 is the match when the envelope is honest. The cabinet is rated to about 900 ft3. You are not near that ceiling. What moves the load is glass and a missing vapor barrier, not the extra twenty bottles you buy next year. A 100-bottle room that later becomes 180 bottles does not need a new compressor if the box was built as a room. It needs more racking.
Keep the architecture fully ducted if the room has to look finished. The compressor lives in an adjoining conditioned space. Only supply and return show. That is the same rule as a 500-bottle room. Scale does not change the concealment rule. A through-wall unit at this size still puts noise and vibration on the finished face. If this closet opens into a kitchen or a dining room, that noise is the whole job.
Install is still a license. Dedicated 115V 15A, insulated ducts, sloped condensate, 50-77F at the cabinet. A 100-bottle closet stuffed into an unconditioned garage will not hold 55F. The garage fails the ambient window, not the BTU math. Read the installation guide before the door is ordered. The sequence is envelope, location, ducts, drain, electrical, then commission.
Glass is the usual surprise. A custom metal door with clear glass is about +15% on a room this small. That still lands on 3500 if the walls are R-20. Do not jump to APEX 5000 because the door is pretty. Jump only if the glass is a wall, the insulation is below R-20, or the calculator says so after you enter the real numbers.
Lighting and door traffic still count at 100 bottles. A closet that opens into a kitchen five times a night is not the same load as a basement door you open twice a week. The calculator uses a residential default for door openings. If this closet is on a party wall, say so when you request a quote. Do not hide extra glass or a second door to make the number look smaller.
Run the BTU calculator with the real dimensions and the glass you actually bought. Then open the 3500 cut sheet. If the calculator returns 3500, believe it. If glass or a weak envelope pushes the number up, fix the envelope before you jump to 5000. US jobs ship direct. Licensed HVAC installs. There is no public US installer network.

How many cubic feet is a 100-bottle cellar?
Often 120 to 200 ft3. It depends on racking density and aisle. Measure the room. Do not convert bottles to BTU with a rule of thumb.
Do I need APEX 5000 for 100 bottles with a glass door?
Usually no. Add about 15% for a glass door and stay on 3500 if the walls are honest. A glass wall is the case that can change the model.
Can I put the 3500 in the garage for a 100-bottle closet?
Only if that garage stays 50-77F year-round. Most do not. Put the cabinet in a conditioned space and duct in.
